Precision slitting blades are the single most decisive component in any metal coil processing line. A deviation of just a few microns in blade thickness or edge geometry can translate into burrs, camber, and costly coil waste across an entire production shift. At Baitian Blade, our slitting knives are manufactured on German CNC grinding centers and held to a thickness tolerance of ±0.002 mm, giving coil processors a level of repeatability that keeps strip quality consistent from the first meter to the last.
Why ±0.002 mm Thickness Accuracy Matters
In high-speed slitting, the blade set determines strip width consistency, edge quality, and tool life. When blade thickness varies between individual knives in a set, the slitting line loses side clearance control, which shows up immediately as:
- Burrs and rolled-over edges on the slit strip
- Uneven strip tension and camber
- Premature blade wear on one side of the set
- Rejected coils and increased scrap rate
By grinding every blade to ±0.002 mm, all knives in a set behave as a matched system. The result is a clean, burr-free shear cut with minimal burr height and excellent strip edge straightness.
German CNC Grinding Technology
Our production line uses German CNC grinding equipment combined with in-process laser measurement. Each blade is measured during grinding rather than after, so dimensional drift is corrected in real time. After grinding, blades pass a final inspection on precision metrology instruments, and inspection data is recorded per batch for full traceability.
Material Selection: SKD11 and HSS
Material choice drives both edge retention and cost efficiency:
- SKD11 (D2 equivalent) — high-chromium tool steel with excellent wear resistance and good toughness. It is the standard choice for cold-rolled steel, stainless strip, and general metal coil slitting.
- HSS (high-speed steel) — ideal for higher line speeds and harder or thinner materials, offering superior hot hardness and edge stability.
Both materials are vacuum heat treated and triple tempered, reaching a hardness range of 58–62 HRC depending on application. Each blade is finished with a controlled edge micro-geometry, so the cutting edge is sharp without being fragile.
Applications: Metal Strip and Battery Film
Metal strip processing. Cold-rolled steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and copper strip lines all depend on matched slitting sets to hold width tolerance and protect downstream forming and coating operations.
Battery film and foil slitting. Lithium battery electrode production is far less forgiving. Coating thickness on the active material is measured in microns, and any burr or metal debris generated during slitting can create internal short-circuit risk. Low-burr slitting blades with ultra-tight thickness tolerance and a polished cutting edge are essential for electrode foil and separator film slitting.
