Standard catalogue blades cover a large share of industrial cutting work, but a significant number of production problems sit outside that range. Non-standard industrial blades are needed when the material, geometry, machine interface, or cutting motion is unique — and when a wrong guess costs weeks of downtime. Our custom blade service is built to move from an unclear requirement to a verified, ready-to-install blade quickly and predictably.
A 5-Step Custom Blade Process
Step 1: 3D Scanning and Requirement Capture
The process starts with the physical reality of your machine. We use 3D scanning to capture the existing blade, holder, and mounting geometry, so the new blade matches the machine interface exactly rather than approximately. Where scanning is not practical, we work from detailed drawings or samples supplied by the customer. At the end of this step we have a verified digital model of the blade envelope and mounting features.
Step 2: Engineering Design and Material Selection
Our engineers translate the scanned data into a cutting geometry optimized for the application. This covers edge angle, tooth form, relief, and tolerances, together with material selection — SKD11, HSS, or another tool steel — plus the appropriate heat treatment cycle. You receive a drawing for review and confirmation before any metal is cut.
Step 3: Material Preparation and Machining
Once the design is approved, blanks are cut and machined to near-final geometry on CNC equipment. Complex profiles such as toothed blades and butterfly blades are formed at this stage, with the tooth pitch and profile held to the approved drawing.
Step 4: Heat Treatment and Precision Grinding
Blades are vacuum heat treated and tempered to the specified hardness, then ground on German CNC grinding centers to final thickness and edge geometry. In-process measurement keeps thickness and flatness within tolerance across the whole batch.
Step 5: Inspection and Delivery
Final inspection covers dimensions, hardness, edge condition, and mounting fit. Every custom blade ships with inspection data, protected packing, and full documentation, ready for installation on arrival.
Custom Blade Types
- Toothed blades — for cutting, perforating, and shredding where a continuous edge is unsuitable, with custom tooth pitch and profile.
- Butterfly blades — double-edge configurations used where cutting action is required in more than one position or direction.
- Circular slitting knives — custom diameters, bore sizes, and keyway details for specific slitting lines.
- Shear blades and guillotine knives — matched to the machine’s blade holder, bed, and cutting angle.
- Special profiles — stepped, grooved, radiused, or otherwise non-standard geometries developed from the scanned model.
MOQ and Lead Time
Our custom blade minimum order quantity is 10 pieces, which keeps custom work economically viable for smaller production runs and single-machine replacements. Standard custom lead time is approximately 40 days from drawing approval, covering material preparation, machining, heat treatment, precision grinding, and inspection. If your machine is down, tell us at the enquiry stage — rush scheduling can often be arranged.
What We Need From You
